James E. Talmage Prophecy

An amazing prophecy made in General Conference Oct 1916 –

The ten tribes shall come; they are not lost unto the Lord; they shall be brought forth as hath been predicted; and I say unto you there are those now living—aye, some here present—who shall live to read the records of the Lost Tribes of Israel, which shall be made one with the record of the Jews, or the Holy Bible, and the record of the Nephites, or the Book of Mormon, even as the Lord hath predicted.[xxiv]

In October 2016, this prophecy will have been given one hundred years ago. Presently, approximately 2% of the population lives to be one hundred. According to the Gerontology Research Group, there have only been 226 Americans that have ever lived to be 112 years old. Therefore, in order for Elder Talmage’s prophecy to be accurate, the return of the Lost Ten Tribes will not only happen in our day, but must be eminent!

This prediction is amazing and many are wondering about it, but it can’t be long to wait now. There are many , including myself, who have in their patriarchal blessing promises that this shall happen in our lifetimes and we will take part in it. p.s im in my late 50’s The Lord promises that this work shall be done, and while there and many who dont believe, I do. Who could of seen 20 years ago how we use the internet or other changes. Things change very quickly. !

That phrase, “live to read” could have more than one meaning. My mother’s patriarchal blessing said she would “live to see a time of peace ushered in”. I, and I think she, herself, always thought she would be alive when the Savior ushered in the millennium. She died about 7 years ago. I contemplated that a lot trying to wrap my head around the meaning. One day the thought came to me that she DID LIVE (action verb) to be worthy to come with the Savior when He ushered in the millennial peace for 1000 years.

I suppose Elder Talmage’s comment could also possibly be in this vein, that there were those who were in that conference who would live righteous enough lives to be priveled to read those sacred words, whether they were still living or had passed away from this earth life. I am just offering this as an alternate idea. I also
I hope to be worthy to read those words. Whether it happens in this life or the next, mattereth not.

I think the the key to understanding the meaning of your mother’s blessing is in understanding what “a time of peace” means. To me the usage of the indefinite article “a” is curious, in that it seems to convey a temporary status to the time of peace. The history of the world has been laced with “times of peace”. Perhaps one of the greatest eras of such peace and accompanying prosperity came after the conclusion of WW2. The world refocused on the importance of the family and values and innocence began to return to our society – unfortunately it did not last. Consider how the use of the definite article could significantly changes the meaning, if her blessing were to have said she would live to see the ushering in of “the” time of peace, I would have immediately assumed that the blessing referred to the ushering in of the Second Coming. Regardless, I thing you bring up an excellent point with regards to LIVING. I have no doubt that the living and the dead will be caught up to met the Lord in the cloud as He returns to usher in the greatest period of peace we the world will have ever known.

Another thought to add in the mix is who knows but that the three Nephites incognito were present at that meeting when Elder Talmage made his inspired declaration?

What if one or more of the Three Nephites happened to be in the congregation at the time of this prophecy? Something to consider?

If the 3 Nephites are like John the beloved ( who we know John is currently working with the Lost Tribes at this time ) according to Joseph Smith. Quite possible the 3 Nephites are able to do the same thing. They would be very familiar with their records even now.
